Extra Curricular
Outside of the Global Learning courses I participated in a few events and discussions around campus to further integrate myself as a global citizen.
I attended about 10 Tuesdays Round Table Discussions in which a lecturer came and briefly discuss a global issue or current events and then opened the floor for discussions amongst the audience made of students. We discussed topics ranging from the role of cultural stereotypes to the echo chamber that is the Internet and the ever present fake news that floats around.
The discussion that impacted me the most was called Hitch Hiker's Guide to the World which examined the benefits of studying abroad. I was awed at everyone's experience of traveling to a new place by themselves, but technically with a group of strangers. The opportunity was an experience of a life time seemed to be the consensus amongst everyone who had participated in study abroad. Experiencing a new culture and exploring new parts of the planet.
I had taken a religious studies course on yoga and the historical philosophy tied to it. At the end of the semester the professor shared with the class about a study abroad opportunity to the Bahamas to practice yoga and meditation and learn more about the philosophy. I was very intrigued about this opportunity but casted it aside. After the Round Table Discussion about studying abroad, I remembered the yoga at the Bahamas programs and set it as a goal.
